The Winds of Spring

The power of the wind.

Well it’s not summer yet! After a warm start to our sailing, we have settled into the variable winds of spring.

Nina and I have long thought of spending a beautiful evening anchored below the temple of Poseidon. It stands on the peninsula of Attica and the temple is beautifully lit up at night. Unfortunately as things go in sailing, the weather dictates all. With forecast strong winds from the south, the bay would be open to the wind and waves and unsafe for the night.

We continued on to the island of Kea. I had been there once before with the Skycrane. It’s a picturesque harbor. We learned that to Titanic’s sister ship is sunk just off the bay. It hit a sea mine left from the Germans in World War 1.

Kea

Kea is a safe harbor and a good place to ride out the strong south winds. Little did we know the winds were just beginning to swing all directions with only a few breaks in between.

We also had the first cat on board. The boys really want a cat. Well this one just hopped on the boat and decided to stay for a while. He was named Kea, after the island. There were some tears the next morning when we decided it was best that Kea, stay on Kea.

We ended up staying 3 nights in Kea before a break in the weather allowing us to sail to the island of Kythnos.

Kythnos has been a favorite since our first time there while test sailing our boat from Mykonos to Athens. The boys wanted to return to a bay on the west shore. Again the weather was in charge, instead we went to Loutra on the east shore. With the forecast winds we were happy to be tied safely inside a concrete harbor. Loutra is incredibly beautiful and is the kind of place one dreams of a Greek village.

We spent a few fun days there waiting for better weather. Unfortunately the hot spring was not as pleasant as the one on the west side of the island. Koen and I tried it out anyway.

The days seem to be going faster than I can imagine. I’ll try to get the blog caught up to our current location soon.

Thanks for following our journey.
