On my way home this morning I gaze out the window, looking down on the San Francisco Bay where I first flew a helicopter in 1997. 27 Years chasing the dream of vertical flight. In some ways it’s been like the search for the perfect turn in Skiing. Always elusive, often frustrating, but when the mission, weather, and conditions aline it’s pure bliss. Those days where your in the grove, and the machine becomes an extension of one’s mind. The movement of the flight controls are not conscious but the helicopter responds perfectly to your intentions. Those days are sometimes few and far between. But they always leave you wanting more.
One more shift and I’m done for awhile! I gaze out the window again. Doubt sets in. Boy, I hope this is the right move.
Looking down at the Oakland airport, thinking back on my career, It dawns on me. This is not the first time I have taken a break from flying to pursue other dreams. Hell, it’s not even the first time I quit a helicopter job to go Sailing.
It’s been a while, but I do think we will be just fine. I look forward to finding myself again.
